Cookie Policy

What Cookies Are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you return, the browser sends that file back, which lets the site recognise your device and remember something about your visit.

Cookies cannot run programs, read other files on your device, or carry viruses. They simply hold small pieces of text — typically a random identifier rather than anything meaningful in itself.

This policy also covers similar technologies where we use them, such as local storage (a browser feature that stores data in much the same way) and session storage (which is cleared the moment you close the tab).

Two kinds worth distinguishing A session cookie is deleted automatically when you close your browser. A persistent cookie stays until it expires or you delete it. SchoolsPortal uses session cookies only — see section 03.

This Cookie Policy forms part of, and should be read alongside, our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

02

Our Approach

SchoolsPortal holds the academic records, attendance, results, and fee information of Nigerian schoolchildren. That places a particular obligation on us, and it shapes how we treat cookies.

Our position is straightforward: we use the minimum number of cookies required for the platform to function, and nothing more. We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles, to follow visitors around the internet, or to sell information about you or your pupils to anyone.

Why there is no cookie banner Consent banners exist because most sites set tracking cookies that require permission. We do not set any. The single cookie we use is strictly necessary to keep you logged in, which does not require consent under the NDPR or comparable frameworks — so there is nothing for you to accept or decline.

If that ever changes — for example, if we introduce analytics to understand how schools use the platform — we will update this policy, and we will ask for your consent before setting any cookie that is not strictly necessary.

03

Cookies We Use

The table below lists every cookie SchoolsPortal sets.

Cookie Purpose Type Expires
PHPSESSID Keeps you signed in as you move between pages. Without it you would be asked to log in again on every single page. It holds a random identifier only — your name, school, and role are stored on our server against that identifier, never in the cookie itself. Strictly necessary When you close your browser
What PHPSESSID does not contain It contains no personal information, no password, no results, and no record of pages you have visited. It is a meaningless string of characters to anyone who obtains it without also having access to our servers.

During a computer-based test, the platform also keeps a small amount of information in your browser's session storage so that answers are not lost if your connection drops briefly. This is cleared automatically when the tab closes, is never transmitted for any purpose other than saving your answers, and is not a cookie.

04

Third-Party Services

We think it is important to be straightforward about services that sit outside our own servers, even where they set no cookies at all.

Service What it is for Sets cookies?
Google Fonts
fonts.googleapis.com
Supplies the typefaces used on our public pages. Because your browser requests the font files directly from Google, Google receives your IP address as part of that request. No cookies set
Payment providers Where your school pays subscription or transaction fees online, the payment page is operated by a licensed payment provider, not by us. That provider sets its own cookies to process the transaction securely and to prevent fraud. Yes — on their pages, governed by their policy
SMS gateway Delivers result notifications and alerts to parents. This operates entirely server-to-server and never involves your browser. No cookies set
Links to other websites Our pages may link to school websites, government portals, or partner organisations. Once you follow such a link you are on a site we do not control, subject to that site's own cookie practices. We would encourage you to read the policy of any site that asks for information about you or your child.
05

What We Do Not Do

Because SchoolsPortal handles children's records, the commitments below matter as much as the list of what we do use.

✓  What our cookie does

  • Keeps you signed in while you work
  • Holds a random identifier and nothing else
  • Disappears when you close your browser
  • Stays entirely within our own systems

✗  What we never do

  • Advertising or re-targeting cookies of any kind
  • Tracking you across other websites
  • Selling or renting data to advertisers or data brokers
  • Building behavioural profiles of pupils, parents, or staff
  • Social media tracking pixels
  • Sharing pupil information with anyone outside your school without lawful basis
A commitment, not just a description We consider the absence of tracking on a children's education platform to be a design decision rather than an accident. Should we ever need to introduce a non-essential cookie, we will publish it here, explain plainly why it is needed, and ask before setting it.
06

Managing Cookies

You are in control of cookies on your own device. Every major browser lets you view what is stored, delete it, and block cookies entirely or per site.

BrowserWhere to look
Google ChromeSettings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies / Site data
Safari (iPhone, iPad, Mac)Settings → Safari → Advanced → Website Data
Microsoft EdgeSettings → Cookies and site permissions
Mozilla FirefoxSettings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
Opera Mini / OperaSettings → Privacy & security → Clear browsing data
Android browsersBrowser menu → Settings → Site settings → Cookies

You may also use your browser's private or incognito mode, which discards all cookies automatically when you close the window.

Shared and school computers If you use SchoolsPortal in a school computer laboratory, a cyber café, or on a shared family phone, always click Log Out when you finish rather than simply closing the tab. Logging out ends your session on our server immediately, which closing a tab does not always do — and on a shared device that difference matters.
07

If You Disable Cookies

We would rather set out the consequences plainly than discourage you from exercising a choice that is yours to make.

  • Browsing the public site — our homepage, news, and information pages work perfectly well with cookies disabled.
  • Logging in — this will not work. Without a session cookie the platform cannot tell one page request from another, so you would be returned to the login screen after every click.
  • Sitting a computer-based test — this will not work, for the same reason.
There is no way around this The session cookie is not a preference or a convenience: it is the mechanism by which a website recognises that a series of page requests come from the same signed-in person. Any platform that keeps you logged in must use one. If you are uncomfortable with that, the alternative is not to use the portal's logged-in features.
08

Pupils & School Accounts

Many SchoolsPortal users are children. Their accounts are created and administered by their school, not by us directly, and their parents or guardians hold accounts linked to them.

The same single session cookie applies to pupil accounts as to every other account. Specifically:

  • We do not place advertising or profiling cookies on any account, and least of all on a child's.
  • We do not track a pupil's browsing beyond the pages of the portal itself.
  • A pupil's cookie is deleted when they close the browser, exactly as for any other user.
For parents and guardians If you have a question about what is stored in connection with your child's account — whether cookies or the records themselves — you are entitled to ask. Contact your child's school in the first instance, as the school controls those records; or write to us at privacy@schoolsportal.com.ng and we will help.

Schools remain responsible for ensuring that their use of SchoolsPortal complies with the NDPR 2019 in respect of the pupils and staff in their care, as set out in our Terms of Use.

09

Legal Basis & Your Rights

SchoolsPortal is operated from Nigeria by SparkleCity Nigeria Limited and is subject to the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation 2019 (NDPR), administered by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), together with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Our lawful basis for the session cookie is that it is strictly necessary to deliver a service you have asked for — namely, access to your account. Cookies of this kind do not require prior consent, because the service cannot be provided without them.

We set no cookies on any other basis. If we did, we would obtain your consent first.

Your rights You have the right to be informed about, and to object to, the processing of your personal data, and to request access to or deletion of it. Those rights and how to exercise them are set out in full in our Privacy Policy. If you believe we have handled your data improperly, you may complain to NITDA.
10

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when the platform changes, when we adopt a new service, or when the law requires it. The date at the top of this page always shows when it was last revised.

Where a change is material — in particular, if we begin using any cookie that is not strictly necessary — we will not rely on you noticing a revised date. We will tell school administrators directly and, where consent is required, ask for it before that cookie is set.

We would encourage you to look over this page occasionally. Continuing to use SchoolsPortal after a change is published means you accept the updated policy.
